What is Thermal Transfer Ribbons

A thermal transfer ribbon is a crucial component in thermal transfer printing, a technology used for creating high-quality and durable prints on various materials.

It consists of a thin, ink-coated film that is heated by the printer's thermal printhead. The heat causes the ink to transfer from the ribbon onto the printing surface, producing a permanent and long-lasting image.

TTR plays a key role in creating clear and durable prints on labels, tags, packaging and other materials.

Thermal Transfer Ribbon Type

There are 3 types of Thermal Transfer Ribbon with different characteristics.

◆ WAX RIBBON

Wax ribbons contain a high concentration of wax-based ink. They are suitable for printing on paper labels and are cost-effective.

Best Use: Ideal for applications where the printed material is not exposed to harsh conditions or rough handling. Commonly used for shipping labels, retail tags, and other general-purpose labeling.

◆ WAX RESIN RIBBON

Wax-resin ribbons are a blend of wax and resin materials. This combination results in a ribbon that offers better durability compared to wax ribbons.

Best Use: Suitable for applications that require a higher level of durability, such as labels used in industries like healthcare and electronics. Provides better resistance to scratches, smudging, and some chemicals.

◆ RESIN RIBBON

Resin ribbons contain a high concentration of resin-based ink. They are known for their high durability and resistance to harsh environmental conditions.

Best Use: Ideal for applications where prints need to withstand extreme conditions, including exposure to chemicals, moisture, and abrasion. Commonly used for asset tags, outdoor labels, and chemical drum labels.

TTR Printer Type

▶ FLAT HEAD

FLAT HEAD ribbons are developed for FLAT HEAD print head. Flat Head print heads are found in the printers of most of the major manufacturers, such as Zebra, Sato, Datamax, TSC. Commonly used for label printing.

▶ NEAR EDGE / Thermal Transfer Overprinter (TTO)

This type of print head is sometimes called a “Corner Edge” print head. “Near Edge” print heads are found mainly in TEC, AVERY, Markem, Videojet, Domino etc. Best used for flexible packaging (expired date printing,etc)

▶ Clothes Tag

Printing price tag on clothing. Heat resistance and scratch resistance ribbon is usually used to avoid loss of information on clothing tag.
Recommended Ribbon: UH710 UH100

▶ Food Packaging

Printing like expired date, or any other information on flexible packaging is also commonly done by Thermal Transfer Overprinter. For example, the best before date or expired date on food like onigiri, vegetables, instant noodles, food product on convenience store.

▶ Card Printing

Printing on PVC/PET material, for example, printing member card is fast and easy with Thermal Transfer Printing.

▶ Pharmaceutical

Thermal Transfer is also often used to print medicine label. Strong chemical-resistant or alcohol resistant resin ribbon is recommended.
